Feeling Space is an intuitive creative project I started in fall 2019 with a specific interest in outfitting queer, trans & non-binary people — and anyone else who appreciates comfy, colorful clothes!

All clothes are cut & sewn locally in Los Angeles, selected for natural fiber fabric quality, comfort, and ease of wear.

Handpainted & dyed items are done so at my studio. Each item is truly one of a kind! Due to the nature of the dye process, variations & inconsistencies are to be expected! These clothes are imbued with a spirit of anti-perfectionism, play, and learning. There are no mistakes!

Core Values

 that inform my work

  • As little waste as possible, always! The majority of clothing items I sell are bought wholesale, made new, from a small-batch manufacturer in LA. I haven't found a consistent range of sizes + styles secondhand.

I paint vintage on an as-I-find-it-basis. If there's something special you’ve found thrifting, email me and depending on my availability, I’m open to painting it! And yes, I happily take donations if you have white/lightly discolored/stained but otherwise good condition clothes laying around!

  • Would it be more profitable for me to paint on clothes that aren’t made in LA, like Hanes or Fruit of the Loom? Yes, absolutely! However, I believe deeply in investing in the local economy and there are a surplus of manufacturers only a few miles from my studio! This keeps money and job circulating in my local community, and lessens the environmental impact of shipping wholesale orders long distances. I buy my painting/dye supplies from Artist & Craftsman in the Arts District, which is a worker-owned art supply company, and Dharma Trading Company. My woven labels were made by Labels & Labels in LA (I HIGHLY recommend them!). I ship to you via USPS, and also offer free local-pickup!

  • I try and only create & sell items that I myself have tried on, worn, and find to be comfortable, easy to style, and durable. I only sell things that I’d sell to my friends at full price with pride & confidence. No shady shit. Please make sure and check the size guide / ask any questions before buying! Please send me questions/inquiries via email versus DM on Instagram.

  • Combating sizeism & fatphobia is super important to me as someone who benefits from thin privilege. I want my clothes to be able to be worn by people of as many body sizes as possible. I always buy clothes in the biggest sizes they’re made from the suppliers I have wholesale accounts with.

Not seeing anything on my size charts that’d fit? I’m really sorry about that — you deserve better. Mail me something (light colored & natural-fiber!) that does and I’d be honored to paint it for you!

Also, as someone married to a non-binary/trans person, one of my main goals is creating affirming clothes for people who may have historically struggled to find them!! Need to try things on to know if they’ll fit? All good! Email me to set up an appointment to come by my studio in LA!

  • Wearing items over and over with pleasure and comfort is vital to me. If something is crap quality and starts pilling after a few weeks, chances are it’ll move to the back of your closet — which sucks because I spent a long time painting it and you paid good money for it! I prioritize high-quality fabric that will hold up over time, always. That said, I also try and keep my price point accessible, so I’m not offering Italian linen or Japanese cotton over here. It’s possible things may fade or thin over time, or pill if they aren't cared for properly (hot water and the dryer are harsh on fabrics!!). May you love them as they change and age!

  • I know that when I don’t charge enough for my work, I get resentful. I get drained. I rush & am more likely to make mistakes. Accordingly, after a little trial & error, I’ve set prices that I feel are an equitable exchange of energy and money. These prices make me feel well cared for and appropriately compensated for the time, labor, energy, skill + creativity I put into each piece (and help cover the cost of my studio rent + existence). They are in line with or lower than other folks’ I see on IG making handpainted clothes. The prices may be higher than mass-produced clothes, because they are special!

May you think of each item as an intuitively created, totally unique work of art — I do! My clothes business is my main source of income. Thank you for supporting my livelihood, I am truly grateful!

How Feeling Space came to be

My parents have co-owned a women's clothing store in SW Portland since 1975 that specializes in natural fiber clothing & locally-made goods. As an only child, I was super involved in the ins & outs of running a small business.

I grew up accompanying my mom to trade shows to select new inventory for the following season, watching my dad handwrite personalized thank-you-cards to each customer, and working behind the counter wrapping presents over the holidays. I always loved fashion magazines, clothes, and dressing up. After studying Critical Theory & Social Justice at Occidental College in LA, I worked at an Early Head Start non-profit for 5 years and completed a Masters in Early Childhood Education while my spouse and I lived in Paris for a glorious year. Some of my most visceral memories of living abroad were exploring flea markets & thrift stores, spending hours by myself trying things on and looking at fabrics & objects. I never considered myself an artist, though both my mom and my partner are painters.

My handpainting and dying practice developed initially as an after-work hobby, a fun way to transform thrifted clothes - the process is completely self-taught. I finally found something I could do all day every day and not feel a need to distract myself! As it turns out, sourcing locally-made clothes in comfortable, gender-expansive styles and curating a joyful, expressive world of inner child healing, unabashed queerness, and all bodies are good bodies positivity is my passion!!!
